This place is one of the most beautiful and elegant hotels I've ever seen. We weren't staying here but we tried the food. We've had the set menu. The presentation was absolutely stunning, the food I found very nice but not that exeptional as expensive in local terms. The most memorable item was a shrimp with salt&pepper, which was fantastic. Cheers, zsofi

Winners buy their dry snakes in Krakor (between Kompong Chhnang and Pursat.) Some of it come salted, other sweet. They also have beautiful dry deer but it is forbiden in Cambodia so nobody should enjoy it, not even with a bowl of pickles and iced beer.

The words 'postmodern theory' make me want to run screaming in front of a bus. Do not repeat them on this site again. Ever.

Baudrillard,"building a narrative", "couldn't be more disjunctive", "deconstruct their dried fish" - get your hand off it Phil.

RM, Robyn: I didn't make it over to Shinta Mani this time, but I will next time. Who would have known that studying a few years of postmodern theory would have prepared me for a life of amateur Third World food writing? You've revealed my dark secret and thus opened a Pandora's box filled with unintelligible French theorists. I can quote Deleuze until Guattari comes home.

Austin: As for the snake, Jo from Meric told me that he's got a reliable snake dryer on the other side of the lake from Siem Reap. I occasionally see barbecued snake for sale in Phnom Penh, but it generally looks pretty grim.

Wow, a wonderfully written post! Loved the 'nostalgia for the future' references, having written something similar on Shanghai (in my past life as an academic). ;-)

Following up on Rasa Malaysia's comment - we had a stunning dinner and an amazing eggs Benedict breakfast at Shinta Mani a couple of yrs ago. Did you make it over there, and is the food still good?

I know the day bed you mentioned in your post. Was at Hotel de la Paix but didn't try out the food at Meric (I know!), instead went to Shinta Mani (which was superb)...I heard the head chef of Meric (Paul Hutt) came from Shinta Mani?
